Business models in the construction industry, like many others, follow a linear approach. We’re talking resource depletion, high carbon footprints, and environmental damage. A shift to a circular economy, where we use resources smartly and cut down on waste, needs to happen pronto.

Adapteo’s Space as a Service (SpaaS) model exemplifies this shift by offering buildings on a rental basis, focusing on longevity, efficiency, and resource optimization. This encourages providers to extend building lifespans and reduce resource use, unlike the old take-make-waste model.

Now, adopting a circular model can be tough. Why? Because of deeply ingrained linear habits, regulatory hurdles, and myths about reused goods. For example, procurement processes often demand "new” modules, wrongly assuming that ‘used’ means ‘poor quality’. To tackle these challenges, manufacturers, service providers, and users must work together to promote reuse, refurbishment, and recycling.

By designing with circular principles—like making smart material choices and planning for end-of-life—we can make buildings easy to take apart, reuse, and recycle. We've made some progress, but there's still a lot of road to cover. Our Space as a Service model is a smart way to bring circular economy ideas into the construction industry, moving it away from old linear methods. Shall we?
